The Office

The Office': Freeform Acquires Non-Exclusive Rights To NBC Comedy – Deadline

NARRATIVE ANALYSIS OF “THE OFFICE”

  • Character:

    • Michael Scott: protagonist/antagonist; there is no true protagonist, he is a critical main character; ignorant, insensitive, insecure, selfish, egotistical, arrogant; values humor and entertainment, success, popularity, community, belonging

    • Dwight: serious, superstitious, neurotic, competitive; values hard work and success over all

    • Talk directly to the camera and audience, involves viewer in the show

    • Satire, extreme, outlandish, overdramatized caricatures of people to create audience draw; you are ultimately thinking more deeply about the world around you by comparing your life to the outlandish, extreme life of the characters in the Office

  • Setting:

    • The Tv show takes place at Dunder Mifflin paper supply company, everybody besides Dwight doesn't like this job because it's too boring.

    • Scranton, Pennsylvania; rural, farm-able

    • Follows every member of the office, POV is from a camera crew who are “flies on the wall”; wants to normalize perspectives and create commentary on standard interpersonal connections, relatable to the “everyday” person. A lot of the characters share their thoughts on a conversation that's being had or their viewpoints on a certain topic or just to interact with the audience.
