SOCIAL MOVEMENT ANALYSIS

  • Outgroup: The Black Panther party is a group of black people working together to fight against systemic oppression. Angela Davis is one notable member and leader of the Black Panther Party.

  • Collective: Large group of people working across the nation to further their mission and philosophy by any means necessary.

  • Who they confront: Police, racists; targeting all oppression in US on basis of economic exploitation anybody who doesn't support or respect black people as human. They don't start trouble just because, but when they feel threatened or disrespected that's when they defend theirselves.

  • Beliefs: Freedom by any means necessary; Malcolm X’s slogan and philosophy; defense against police brutality; Marxist economic and political theory, capitalism and economic exploitation root of oppression  

  • Period of time: Started in CA in October 1966 and ended Mid 1977. Black Panthers were all around the world from Seattle, New York, Chicago and many more. Throughout their period of time they were a movement who looked out and protected the black community. They were able to set up programs for education, breakfast for children and community health programs. They represented the black community when nobody else would.
